Haas Passes Bill to Support Law Enforcement and Protect Schools

SPRINGFIELD – Yesterday, State Representative Jackie Haas (R-Kankakee) unanimously passed a bill to support law enforcement officers and bolster protection in schools on the House floor.

Currently, retired sheriff’s officers who work more than 599 hours per year are considered full-time employees and have their pension benefits suspended. House Bill 79 would raise the limit to 999 hours per year, assuring that retired sheriff’s officers who want to work as school safety officers keep their earned annuities.

“This bill helps protect annual annuities for retired sheriff’s officers and keeps our schools safe,” said Haas. “We have retired sheriff’s officers who want to work and keep our children safe, but it could cost them their hard-earned benefits. I look forward to continued bipartisan support on this bill.”
