SPRINGFIELD – Yesterday, State Representative Jackie Haas (R-Kankakee) unanimously passed a bill establishing March as French Heritage Month in Illinois on the House floor.
“House Bill 2361 designates the month of March of each year as French Heritage Month to promote the study of the French language and the culture of French-speaking people,” said Haas. “This bill is a fantastic local initiative that was brought to me due to my own French heritage and efforts to bring more recognition of French culture to Illinois.”
Haas worked alongside multiple constituents, local organizations, and international leaders on this legislation.
Haas concluded, “I want to give a special thank you to everyone who collaborated on this legislation, including Lisa Kahn the Chicago-Midwest Chapter Chair of the French Heritage Society, Jim Paul the President of the Bourbonnais Grove Historical Society, and two French Consulates from Quebec: Clément Calais and Yannick Tagand.”
This bill now awaits further action in the Senate.
